Trauma-Informed Motivational Interviewing Fellowship

This Fellowship opportunity offers 10 weeks of training in Trauma-Informed Motivational Interviewing at no charge, followed by 6 months of small group coaching and case consultation. It is an unpaid Fellowship (no stipend) but all training is free of charge to selected awardees. Finalists will be invited to a Zoom interview.

We generally work exclusively with agencies that send groups of employees through Motivational Interviewing training. The cohort class sizes are between 13-25. Training is offered for 10 weeks, 3 hours at a time, followed by biweekly coaching for six months. While this is happening, we meet with the agency admin team to support them in aligning their policies and practices to support the MI model. We strongly believe this is the best way for an agency to implement an evidence-based practice model.

Yet, we realize that some do not have agency access to this kind of intensive training. From a social justice perspective, we want to support practitioners for whom training may be too expensive or otherwise out of reach. We are especially interested in supporting workers who are BIPOC or work mostly with marginalized or racialized communities. This is the purpose of the Fellowship opportunity. We will match you with an agency that is currently slated for training and you will join their training cohort. We will attempt to match you with the type of agency you currently work in (ie adult mental health, child welfare).

Each time we offer agency training, we ask for 1-2 spots held for no-cost Fellowship training slots. We sponsor these slots: there is no extra cost to the agency, and we provide one-on-one mentoring supports for free.

Commitment

Participants are expected to:

  • attend training each week for ten weeks. Training is 3 hours and interactive.

  • Some reading is required between meetings. We provide materials. We will ask you to practice a specific skill each week and debrief about your success and struggles.

  • You will be asked to bring case examples, role play, and actively participate in training and post-training coaching. Coaching groups are approx 4-6 people, and participants take turns staffing cases and practicing skills.

  • In exchange for free extensive training, we will ask you to meet with us one time to offer feedback about how to improve the cultural responsiveness of our training, drawing upon your practice experience. We will add you to an advisory board to occasionally offer feedback on new material.

  • You need permission and support from your employer to participate.

  • You need to be able to use camera and sound on Zoom.

To apply

We provide fellowships when possible for trained social workers who otherwise wouldn't have access to Motivational Interviewing Training. Supervisor permission is required. Please contact Melanie Sage.
